Pediatric foot care

Foot health is just as important for children as it is for adults.

Common podiatric issues the affect children are:

  • flatfoot deformity or rigid pediatric flatfoot, where the arch portion does not have the characteristic upward curve
  • gait abnormalities that affect the way your child walks and moves and impedes their ability to participate in normal activities including sports
  • plantar warts, ingrown toenails and skin conditions
  • clubfoot and in-toeing, congenital deformities which may be flexible or rigid
  • fractures, ligament tears and injuries related to sports, falls and other accidents
  • ingrown toenails can occur in children
  • Sever’s disease is a heel injury resulting in inflammation of the growth plate of the heel, common to athletic children during a growth spurt before the heel plate is fully developed

As a parent, you should ensure that your child’s feet are developing properly and are being properly maintained. If your child complains of foot or ankle pain, or if you notice any unusual signs in the walking gate or structure of your child’s foot or ankle, it is best to schedule an appointment with one of our board certified podiatrist right away. Addressing problems during the early stages can mean the difference between your child having healthy feet for life or suffering from painful injuries in the future.
